History was made again as Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, Lagos Chapter had the Grand-Finale of the World Food Safety 2025 Celebration event which is a Market Advocacy program at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025 at 10am.
The traders converged in front of the Iyaloja’s Office and the program started with a brief talk on Food safety by our partners.
The Market Advocacy program was organized to sensitize the traders in the market, and Food sellers/handlers on FOOD SAFETY measures and best practices while discouraging Food Frauds and other bad practices engaged on by Food handlers in cutting cost or making more gains/profits thereby endangering the lives of their patronizers and family members.
Such bad practices mentioned and discouraged were; the use of Paracetamol to tenderize meat (use ginger and garlic instead), use of carbide to ripen fruits, plantains & bananas, use of sniper chemical on dry foods to prevent pests, use of newspaper and nylon in selling (hot) food, addition of colouring to palm oil, improper hand washing and handling of food etc.
In attendance were Street Food Safety Initiative Champions and Lagos Chapter NIFSTers (host), our partners; Professional Association of Public Health Nurses of Nigeria (PAPHNON), LAGOS State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), Lagos State Safety Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, representatives of the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of the Environment & Water Resources (MoE & WR), Nigerian Police Force (NPF) etc. who supported us in propagating the gospel of Food Safety and ensuring that the market advocacy go on smoothly.
It was a great, successful and memorable event.
Attached are pictures and videos from this special program.
We are changing the narrative, shifting and abolishing the bad culture of Food Fraud, correcting the sharp practices, supporting wholesome food and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
