The President of NIFST, Dr Chijioke Osuji, made the assertion in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

“There is need for government to focus on food policies in the country.

“It is time for food scientists and technologists to revisit the aspect of our food policies that have impaired our achievement of food security over the years,’’ it said.

The statement said there was need to add more vigour to the policies so that they would promote import substitution of food raw material and engineering infrastructure for the development of food processing equipment.

It called for the inclusion of food professionals in critical agencies and programmes that impacted on food security which should be supported for success.

The statement also called on NISFT members who were involved in policy formulation, advisory and implementation to step up their influence and advance food policy management in the different sectors.

It noted that the policies should impact on post-harvest aspects of our food supply chain which needed regular reviews to keep them relevant in a constantly changing world. (NAN)
