The Katsina State Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Umar Gwajo-Gwajo, has urged the Federal Government to protect local farmers, insisting that it was necessary for boosting the economy.
Speaking yesterday during the inauguration of officials of Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria in Katsina, Gwajo-Gwajo said lack of financial and technical support to farmers has been the bane of agricultural development in the country.
“If the government is serious about boosting the economy, it must as a matter of urgency redirect policies to protect local farmers to grow the economy”.
He advocated for laying greater emphasis on safeguarding the common farmer by checking importation of products like poultry.
Earlier, the newly inaugurated Chairman, LawalSanda, said a development blue print has already been drafted to address knowledge and skill acquisition, revenue generation, and contact and membership drive.
He said the association shall vigorously pursue, facilitate and encourage good quality production of poultry and poultry products and provide value addition to all poultry products and by-products.
Inaugurating the officials, State Director of Poultry, Fisheries and Bee Keeping, Ibrahim ShehuMusawa said the need for such association is desirous, in view of their importance in entrenching professional and best practices in poultry businesses.
He said the time has come for the association to key in to benefit from the N2 billion loan scheme to boost and expand its operations for the benefit of all.
