Food and feed Fraud, Implications, Challenges and Way forward
INTRODUCTION
¨Food or feed fraud refers to intentionally and economically motivated adulteration (EMA) of foods.
¨EMA is the intentional sale of substandard food or feed products or ingredients for the purpose of economic gain
¨Fraudulent addition of non-authentic substances or the fraudulent removal or replacement of authentic substances without the knowledge of the buyer and for financial gain of the seller
¨Unique type of incident that occurs due to the motivation of human perpetrators to avoid detection (specifically arrest or seizure of the products) thereby to achieve financial gain
¨Contrast with food and feed safety where the aim is to prevent unintentional/accidental adulteration, using science-based principles.
