MEMBERSHIP

FCT-NAQS-VISIT

There shall be the following grades of memberships but without prejudice to the power of the Institute to create further, reduce or otherwise amend the number, designation or title or categories of existing or further membership.

The categories or type of membership, for the time being, shall comprise and be known as (i) Student member; (ii) Licentiate member; (iii) Professional member; (iv) Honorary member; (v) Fellow (vi) Honorary fellow (vii) Corporate member.

The requirement for admissions to the above categories or grades of membership shall be as follows:

Student Member: He shall be a person not under 16 years of age, enrolled in a recognized course of study in Food Science or Food Technology at the time of application, and shall satisfy the conditions laid down by the Governing Council.

Licentiate: He shall be a person who has either:

  • National Diploma in Food Science and Technology
  • Graduates from other related fields of study with relevant experience in Food Science and Technology (or food processing).
  • Satisfied the Council requirements by virtue of his experience in the field of Food Science and Technology and in view of the responsibility of his employment and by any additional evidence acceptable to the Council, that he is a suitable person to be admitted.

Professional Member: He shall be a person who has either:

  • HND or B.Sc. or B.Tech. Degree in Food Science and Technology or Food Science or Food Technology or
  • OND in Food Science and Technology or Food Science or Food Technology who must have been admitted into Licentiate membership for at least one year and has applied for membership upgrade provided he/she has a minimum 5 years relevant experience in a unit/department of an organization/institution in which scientific post-harvest food issues/business are processed/regulated/taught/researched as regular work or
  • Any of HND or B.Sc. or B.Tech. or B. Eng. or MBBS in Food Science and Nutrition, Brewing Science and Technology, Food Engineering, Food Science and Microbiology, Chemistry, Industrial/Applied Chemistry, Nutrition, Chemical Engineering, Science Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Industrial/Applied Microbiology, Animal Science and Medicine who must have been admitted into Licentiate membership for at least one year and has applied for membership upgrade provided he/she has a minimum 5 years relevant experience in a unit/department of an organization/institution in which scientific post-harvest food issues/business are processed/regulated/taught/researched as regular work or
  • A Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Food Science and Technology plus HND or B.Sc. or B.Tech. or B. Eng. or MBBS in Food Science and Nutrition, Brewing Science and Technology, Food Engineering, Food Science and Microbiology, Chemistry, Industrial/Applied Chemistry, Nutrition, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Industrial/Applied Microbiology, Animal Science, Agric. Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Science Laboratory Technology and Medicine.

Honorary Member: He shall be a person who has HND or B.Sc degree plus 5 years (minimum) of association with food production & the Institute.

Fellow: He shall be a person not under 35 years of age who has fifteen years of NIFST membership with substantial evidence of contribution and active participation. Such interested member would apply to the Council stating biodata/qualification.
Honorary Fellow: The title may be conferred by the Institute on an individual with more than 20 yrs of association with the food industry and the institute or an outstanding national immense benefit in the Food Industry or to the institute.

Corporate Membership: The status Corporate Membership may be conferred by Council upon an Industry, a Company, an Institute or any otherwise legally organized body which is judged to have made significant contributions in promoting one or more of the stated objectives of the institute.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

Membership fees must be paid at the time of application for membership. (It exempts the applicants, upon election, from the annual subscription fees for the first year). The following fees will apply to the grade of membership.

Fellows: #25,000
Members: #15,000
Licentiates: #13,000
Student Members: #1,000 (Exclusive of Journals)

 

PROCESSING OF APPLICATIONS

Application forms can be obtained by paying for the registration form online or writing the National Secretary to whom they are to be returned upon completion. A completed form must be accompanied by the appropriate fee in bank draft, bank certified cheque or cash paid at the secretariat at the point of submission or into any First Bank Plc, AC No: 2000055846, Sort Code: 011151896, photocopies of credentials, curriculum vitae (CV), Letter of Employment(if employed)/ Letter of Promotion and a certified passport photograph.

Each application is first sent to a Membership Committee scrutineer who checks it against requirements and makes a preliminary assessment. It is then put before the next meeting of the Membership Committee which considers the application and makes a recommendation to Council. If the information is inadequate or if references are not adequate, the application has to be deferred until they are available and may be considered at subsequent meetings of the Membership Committee (held at approximately two month intervals). In some cases, it may be necessary for the Council to exercise its prerogative of requiring further evidence in whatever form it considers desirable. Finally, the recommendation is considered by the Council and the applicant is notified of the Council’s decision.
